Taking Time Out
It’s the best medicine for mind, body and soul
The last two years have been a challenge for many, and with Christmas just around the corner it is important to look after yourself so that you can support others around you. Taking time out has been pushed aside with everything else going on.
Looking after others takes energy and if you are running low, you may find yourself falling into a heap and putting your immune system at risk. This is not ideal, and in our current climate, can be devastating.
We often get busy with life and get caught up in the day to day of work, and we don’t stop and take personal time; especially with recent lockdowns. As we are all getting better at learning, taking care of your own mental, physical, and emotional health should be a top priority. Whether it’s a short holiday, a weekend away or having a day of pampering, taking time to rejuvenate can be the best medicine for the mind, body and soul.
I recently took a short break on the Whitsundays, Queensland where I discovered that there was no cellular and no Wi-Fi which meant no distractions. It gave me time to reflect and recharge for what lies ahead. The break could not have come at a better time. I had been burning the candle at both ends, my patience was wearing thin and I found myself having to stop before saying or reacting to things that could have resulted in effects that may be hard to recover from. The affects of burnout not only affect me but can have negative affects on those around me as well.
Reading the Signs
It’s important for us to identify and understand the signs for when it’s time to have a break. Some key triggers may be:
- Becoming irritated at the small things that other do that normally would just wash over you
- Being short with others that could be received as rude; or worst yet, disrespecting them unintentionally
- Not being present – trying to do too many things all at once and not having the presence that others deserve
- Being tired!
This is not a comprehensive list, but these were the signs that I saw in myself that told me to STOP and take a good hard look at my life. It was time to take a break, reset mentally, physically relax and rejuvenate the soul. I’m already feeling more like my old self!
Whether it’s Yoga, Camping, Fishing, Sailing, 5 Star resorts, Hiking, visiting a Museum or Art Gallery – whatever appeals most. Taking time out can come in many different forms.
Whatever it takes, take a short break, explore your beautiful country and take time for yourself – it is the best medicine for mind, body and soul.
